This original story has been years in the making. The project found new life about a decade ago after Mason decided to update a story called The Mask created by his father Rick. During this time I (Shawn) had created art for a short story Mason had written. Mason shared The Mask story with me, curious to see what I thought.
I was instantly inspired by the writing and the message and began to sketch ideas that day. One of my first drawings was of the old shop owner. It seemed to draw itself and instantly the story had come to life. This inspired even more sketches. Once I shared these with Mason and Rick we all new this had the potential to be something wonderful.
After many adjustments, delays, changes, additions big and small, this daunting art project has finally come together, creating an amazing picture book for all ages. We hope you love it as much as we loved making it.
Rick is a pastor, writer, cartoonist, and veteran youth worker. He is the author of numerous youth ministry resources, including Passed Thru Fire and The Passed Thru Fire Experience. He worked with Bethany Hamilton on her bestselling Soul Surfer book. Rick serves as a teaching pastor and helped found Kauai Christian Fellowship in 1991 in Poipu, Hawaii.
Author, musician and troublemaker Mason Ian Bundschuh was raised in Hawaii, educated in England, Mason is also a professional musician, guitar-builder, and clinically proven non-conformist pain-in-the-butt to most authority types.
Owner and head instructor of Carson's Art School in Katy Texas. Mr. Carson has been teaching since the age of 15, and has illustrated many books over the years, like The Zabbit, and yet to be published original children's book of his own about Noah from the Bible. This latest project, The Mask, has been his biggest so far, but well worth the long nights to see it come to life.
